Addicted TO SIN?

WHAT IS SIN?

The world today would like to get rid of the idea of sin. If society was to accept sin as a reality, it would have to believe that there is a divine law that is above human law which differentiates between right and wrong. And if there is a divine law, then there must be a divine law giver, who is God. Most people agree that crimes like murder are wrong but they don’t accept that all sins are wrong. That is what society wants us to think because if it accepted that sin really exists, then it would have to accept the existence of the devil and in that case God must exist too. But the world cannot do that, so it ignores the reality of sin which is described as “intrinsically and gravely disordered actions” (CCC 2352) and passes them off under the false guise of “human freedom”. The Church teaches that sin does exist. It is an offense against God, rising up against Him in pride and thinking that we know better than God what is good for us. It is the exact opposite of the obedience of Jesus, who achieved our salvation.

CONSEQUENCE FOR US

Any sin we commit has a direct effect on us. When we give in to temptation or greed we have to actually silence the voice within us that says, “Don’t do it” and ignore our conscience, which I now understand to be the voice of the Holy Spirit. When we sin there is a transient pleasure and joy, but after the act we always regret it. Some sins can become so habitual that they control our lives and become addictions, like drinking alcohol, smoking or looking at pornography. That’s because the more we commit a sin, the more we feel useless, worthless and helpless and then it is easier to supress our conscience and sin again. In Genesis chapter 3, after Adam and Eve had disobeyed God and committed the first sin they hid themselves from the Lord because they were afraid and full of shame. Sin causes fear, shame and guilt and we want to hide it. I remember when I was addicted to a very personal sin, I knew that what I was doing was wrong and afterwards I felt miserable and ashamed but I could not stop it. It started quite innocently once in a while and then what was infrequent suddenly became more frequent. I found myself falling deeper and deeper and looking back, I can say that I actually became quite reliant on it.

BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS

Another major consequence of sin is the strain on our relationships. Each time we sin we are devaluing ourselves and so we will feel inferior to those around us which makes us frustrated, and angry with those who love us. When we are ashamed of our sins we try to hide them from our parents and our friends, in case they find out. We might feel that our parents don’t understand what we are going through, but it is because we aren’t being truthful or honest about ourselves. I remember feeling very lonely and separated from everything. I became more reclusive and just wanted to be left alone most of the time.

THE GOOD NEWS

When we have problems with sin, it is not that no one understands us, the main issue is our relationship with God. Only when we are right with God can we appreciate and love our family and friends and be open and honest with them. The good news for us all is that we can be freed from our addictions to sin and our relationships can be healed. Jesus Christ died on the Cross for us. He paid the price for our sins so that we can be forgiven and cleansed in His blood. When we are truly sorry and want to make a fresh start the Church offers the Sacrament of Reconciliation. When we repent of our sins in Confession, we regain control of our lives and the strength to fight against sin. When we turn back to Him and dwell in His presence then God, who loves us, will work miracles is us and make us instruments of His love. After all, Christ died on the cross with His arms nailed open wide so that He could receive us eternally. And just as the prodigal son returned to his father, we too are able to return to our Lord through Christ Jesus who washes us clean and makes us new in Him.

Sailing Through the Storms(Matthew 8:23-27)

Jesus calms the storm

One evening, Jesus said to His disciples, “Let us cross to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and began rowing across the sea. All of a sudden, there was a storm, the waves began breaking over the boat and it was quickly filling up with water. The disciples were terrified, thinking that the boat was about to sink and they would all drown. They began to panic. While all this was happening, Jesus was in the back of the boat, with His head on a pillow, fast asleep. When the disciples saw this, they were bewildered. Why didn’t Jesus know what was happening? Why wasn’t He doing anything to save them? They were so worried that they shook Him and asked, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re about to drown?” Then Jesus woke up and ordered the wind and the waves to be quiet. Immediately, there was a great calm. Then, Jesus asked the disciples, “Why were you afraid? Do you not have faith and believe that I could save you?” The disciples were amazed and said to one another, “Who is this that even the wind and sea obey Him?”

Do you not have faith?

If we claim to have faith in God, why do we still panic so much when things go wrong in our lives? It takes a lot of courage to keep trusting and it is human nature to want to be in control of everything. So instead of letting Jesus take the steering wheel and guide us, we try to take matters into our own hands and then end up stuck in a dead end or crashing into something. When things don’t go the way that we had planned, we are tempted to ask God, “Why did you let that happen, Lord?” But we can never fully understand why God allows difficult situations to happen to us. It is impossible to know God’s ways with our limited human minds. There is one thing that we can do and that’s to have faith and trust in our hearts. We cannot rely on our brains to try to give us all the answers. Our Father knows us better than we know ourselves and everything He allows to happen in our lives is for our good. “For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare, not for woe, plans to give you a future full of hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

God never sleeps

There are times when we think that God is never going to answer our prayers, no matter how much we pray. It can feel like He is not paying any attention to us. So is he asleep? No! Our God never sleeps. During every moment of our lives, He is watching over us with great love and affection. Whenever we feel that God is not responding to our petitions, it’s not because He hasn’t heard us, it’s because He is busy working in our lives. He’s fixing our problems in unimaginable ways. If we are patient and keep praying then God will complete His work and with perfect timing our prayers will be answered in ways we might not imagine but better than anything we had ever hoped for. There’s no doubt that God will surpass all our expectations! “O Lord my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.” (Psalm 40:5) So, the next time we feel that God is ignoring our problems we should remember that our protector never sleeps!

The Prince of Peace

Many people today suffer from depression and have issues with anxiety. Some people feel like there’s no point to life because their hearts are so troubled and distressed. They are trapped in a world of inner conflicts and misery. But, there is one person who can take away all our anxieties and worries, Jesus. He is the Prince of Peace and is the definition of true peace. “Peace I leave you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” (John 14:27) This inner peace that Jesus is offering us is not temporary; it’s eternal. Once we invite this peace into our lives, Jesus will take care of anything and everything that is bothering us, however big or small. There’s no need for us to be weighed down with worry and anxiety when Jesus is eagerly waiting to lavish upon us His everlasting peace. “Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace.” (Colossians 3:15)

THE FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

What are the fruits of the Holy Spirit and how do we recognise them? More importantly, how do we know that we are responding to God by seeking His loving plan for our lives? Jesus tells us that we can recognise a tree by its fruit (Matthew 15:15-19). If we are filled with the Holy Spirit, then these fruits should be bubbling over in our lives and others should be able to easily recognise God working in us.

We may not always recognise it, but we need these fruits more than anything else. Every yearning we have, ever had, or will ever have is for these fruits. We may try and substitute other things hoping to find happiness in possessions or even in people but this never produces real lasting joy. Only by using the gifts of the Holy Spirit and yielding to the fruits of the Spirit will we experience true joy. The twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit are:

“For all who live by the Spirit of God are children of God” Romans 8:14

LOVE

Loving God above all else and loving others as God asks us to. Even loving those we don’t like and those who may wish to harm us, by praying for them.

JOY

Not just a feeling of happiness but knowing deep within our being that God has a loving plan for our life and that we can trust Him to care for us, even in the midst of trouble or suffering.

PEACE

A serenity and peace that comes from the order that God creates in us. The world makes our lives disordered and chaotic. God wants us to experience His order and peace.

PATIENCE

Enduring inconvenience, hardship and difficulty without complaining.

KINDNESS

Showing a concern for others in trouble or in need.

GOODNESS

Doing what we know to be right in all circumstances and avoiding evil.

GENEROSITY

Giving freely of our time, money, gifts, talents and possessions. God is a lavish giver and we can never outdo God in generosity, but we can try to follow His example.

GENTLENESS

Being submissive and obedient to the will of God for our life and having consideration for others.

MODESTY

Showing moderation in speech, dress and behaviour; not using bad language or showing off.

SELF-CONTROL

Having control over our bodily desires so that we can focus on what is right and good for our lives e.g. being moderate in our eating and drinking; being careful about how we use the internet, not accessing unsuitable material, limiting the time we spend on social media.

FAITHFULNESS

Being reliable and trustworthy in all things, small and great.

CHASTITY

Moderation and control of our sexual desire according to our state of life: married, single or celibate, young or not so young, we are all called to live chaste, pure and holy lives. If we consider what we really want in life, we will realise that we want a life filled with these fruits. They bring order, peace and tranquillity, even in the midst of trouble, sorrow and pain. A life of sin is the opposite of a Spiritfilled life and it brings misery and chaos. Sin rejects God and His desire for us to become the beautiful, holy people He created us to be. Sin rejects order and a disordered life causes us to be anxious and fearful. Let us ask God to fill us with His Holy Spirit. Then we and those we live and work with, will recognise the gifts and fruits working in our life, filling us with His love, joy and peace. Gifts which the world and all it offers can never give us.

MY ANGELIC ENCOUNTER

HOME ALONE

I attended a School of Evangelisation run by Sehion Ministries in 2013 and it changed my life. The Holy Spirit of God touched me deeply and I experienced the love of my Heavenly Father, Abba in an encounter that was beyond words, just beautiful! Suddenly from nowhere I had a desire to live my life for the Lord and to lead a sinless life, well at least to try to. A week after this experience my parents left to go to India to help with a mission in Arunachel Pradesh with the Sehion team. I was quite worried at the time because I’d be home alone for two weeks, and the chances of me falling into sin were significantly higher than when my parents were around. So I was quite scared thinking about how I was going to cope with two weeks on my own!

CONSTANT PRAYER

The Lord says in Psalm 55:22 “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you”, and “cast all your anxieties on Him, for He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7) I was very anxious so I gave all my worry to Jesus in prayer. As a result I felt that Jesus, Himself, came to me and He sent His Mother to comfort me. The Holy Spirit inspired me to pray the Rosary as much as I could and I began to pray four Rosaries every day, as well as many other prayers such as the Way of The Cross. I also spent lots of time reading the Bible and memorising Scriptures. I had never been a man of prayer before this, so I couldn’t believe how much time I was spending in prayer! As prayer became a habit for me during these two weeks, sin became nothing to me. I could resist all temptations. Satan could not touch me because Jesus was holding on to me with His victorious right hand! I also realised the power of the Rosary and the protection of our Mother Mary for those who pray the Rosary. Since that time, I have kept the grace that was given to me to pray as many Rosaries as I could, thanks be to God!

STRANDED IN MUMBAI

After their two week mission, I was to fly to India, by myself, to join my parents. I took a flight to Mumbai and from there had to take another plane to Kochi. When I reached Mumbai, I was very excited to be going back to Kerala and rushed to the gate for my connecting flight. As I approached the gate, I discovered that all the flights to Kochi had been cancelled due to a flood on the runway. I just stood there in shock not knowing what to do. I was completely clueless thinking to myself, okay, I’ll stand here looking miserable and maybe the airport staff will feel sorry for me and arrange a flight somehow just for me!

A STRANGER

Suddenly, a stranger appeared to my right and asked me what was wrong. He spoke like an old friend who knew me well. I had been panicking but he was so cool and relaxed. He was very kind and treated me like his own son. He went with me to another desk at the airport to see if there were other options to get me home. He told me not to worry about a thing because he would sort everything out for me. I was amazed. As I walked beside him I was wondering what exactly was going on; some random guy had appeared out of nowhere offering me a five-star service!

ANOTHER MIRACLE

After a few hours of waiting in Mumbai, he somehow got us both on to a flight to Coimbatore, in Tamil Nadu. I praised and thanked the Lord during the flight for His extraordinary help from heaven. We arrived in Coimbatore, and to my astonishment, the man told me that he had arranged for his son in law to drive me all the way to my parents in Kerala in his car. I stood in awe thanking God that a second stranger was willing to drive eleven hours there and back from Coimbatore to Kochi just for me! Eventually, I arrived home safe and sound, thanks be to God!

ANSWER TO PRAYER

My mom told me that she had been worried about me travelling on my own and had remembered how the Archangel Raphael had accompanied Tobias on his journey to foreign lands in the Book of Tobit, so she prayed to God to send the Archangel Raphael to help me on my journey to Kerala. Later, while I was praying in thanksgiving to the Lord, He revealed to me that He had answered my mom’s prayer and had sent St. Raphael to assist me. I personally believe that it was my Guardian Angel and St. Raphael working together who got me home! After this incident, St. Raphael the Archangel has become my top boy!

May 2015 – Editorial

Welcome to the current issue of Kingdom Revelator, a magazine designed for teenagers and young people. In this issue we continue to look at different aspects of our faith and how they can help us in our everyday lives. Our faith is not just about going to Mass on Sunday and then living the rest of the week as if God is not interested in us. Our Sunday Mass should be the highlight of the week and from that we get the strength to live the rest of the week as true followers of Jesus. When we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus in the Eucharist the blessings that we receive are not just for ourselves but they are to be shared with those around us. So in this issue we look at evangelisation and how to spread the Good News and help our friends to encounter the love of Christ.

One of our readers has written an article about the problems of sin and how it had a hold over him for many years. He looks at the effect that it had on him and those around him and how it is possible to break free from an addiction. To complement this there is an article about Penance and Reconciliation, a wonderful Sacrament that can bring amazing healing and peace to our lives. Continuing from the last issue we include a description of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and how we can recognise the working of the Holy Spirit in our lives. There is the story of how a trip to India to join his parents went disastrously wrong for one of our young readers but God provided two wonderful people who made sure that he got home safely. These personal testimonies are very encouraging and help to build up our faith. If you have a similar experience of how God has worked in your life that you would like to share with our readers please e-mail your story to us at kfkmag@gmail.com.

May the Holy Spirit enlighten your hearts and your minds as you read and bring you to a deeper faith and trust in Christ Jesus.

PENTECOST REFLECTION

In this extract from a homily given on Pentecost Sunday 2013 Pope Francis looks at three things that the Holy Spirit brings.

NEWNESS

When we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives He will bring newness. This can make us feel uncomfortable because we naturally want to be in control and plan our lives for ourselves. We are happy to be followers of Jesus up to a point but it is hard to abandon our lives completely to Him. We worry that God might take us on a path that we don’t want to take because throughout the Bible whenever God has revealed himself to someone He has brought newness and change into their lives. Noah was ridiculed but when he built the Ark he was saved. Abraham had to leave his home and his country on the strength of a promise by God. We should not fear this newness that the Holy Spirit brings into our lives because it also brings with it a sense of fulfilment and gives us a great joy and peace. Do we want to be surprised by God? Are we open to the Holy Spirit in our lives? Do we have the courage to be led down the new paths that God sets before us?

HARMONY

The Holy Spirit brings harmony to the Church. He brings many different charisms and gifts but these all work together for the good of all. Every Christian should realise how important the Church is. It is through the Holy Spirit working in the Church that the Christian receives Christ and the teaching of the Church, inspired by the Holy Spirit, guides and sustains our faith. When we put ourselves outside the Church’s teaching and community then we create division and disharmony. So let us ask ourselves: Do we let ourselves be guided by the Holy Spirit living in the Church and with the Church?

MISSION

Our souls have been likened to a sailing boat with the Holy Spirit being the wind that blows it forward in the right direction helped by occasional gusts of wind produced by the gifts of the Spirit. With the help of the Holy Spirit the Church is always driven forward and stops being self-centred and closed in on herself. She is compelled to go out and proclaim the Gospel and to communicate the joy of faith helping everyone to meet with Christ. The Holy Spirit gives us the courage to take the Gospel message out onto the streets of the world. Do we let the Holy Spirit open us up to the mission of spreading the Gospel?

Jesus says: “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to remain with you forever” John 14:16

DO NOT BE AFRAID

There are many pressures on us these days and we tend to worry about all sorts of things but the Bible tells us three hundred and sixty five times not to be afraid. Dr John Das shows us why our loving God is speaking this important message to our hearts today.

CALLED BY OUR NAME

God loves each one of us intimately and has called each one of us by our name. Jesus is the good shepherd who calls us to follow Him. “The sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” (John 10:3) A good shepherd knows each one of his sheep and if he loses one he always knows which one is missing without counting them. Then he will go out searching for the lost sheep. When he finds it he will know it by its bleating. He will be able to pick it out from among all the other lost sheep, even though they all look alike because he knows his sheep so well.

GOD HAS A PLAN FOR US

God said, ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you and before you were born I consecrated you.” (Jeremiah1:5) He is saying the same thing to us today. God had a plan for each one of us, even before we were born. We are the chosen ones and he loves each one of us individually, so there is no need to be afraid. He knows us and loves us. “He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love.” (Ephesians 1:4)

DIVINE PROTECTION

God will protect us from all harm. Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den and they left him there for six days. (Daniel 14: 31-42) In the pit were seven starving lions but God protected him and the lions did not eat him. This was a miracle but even more amazing is that God also took care to satisfy his beloved son, Daniel’s, hunger. He sent an angel to the prophet Habakkuk, who was in Judaea preparing a meal for the workers in the fields. The angel asked him to take the food instead to Daniel, then took hold of Habakkuk by his hair and flew with him at the speed of the wind to Babylon which was a great distance away. The angel set Habakkuk down on the edge of the pit and he called to Daniel to take the food that God had sent him. Daniel replied, “You have remembered me, O God, and have not forsaken those who love you.” (Daniel 14:37) If we too love God like Daniel did then He will never abandon us.

GOD HOLDS OUR HANDS

When we have problems and times are difficult we should not be afraid because God our father is holding our hand and walking with us. “I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, Do not fear, I will help you.” (Isaiah 41:13) Even if we turn away from God we should not be afraid because he allows us to say sorry and turn back to Him. When we go to the Sacrament of Confession there is no condemnation. We are forgiven and there is great joy in heaven and in our hearts. When we are walking in His ways, the Lord is delighted. We may struggle sometimes but He will give us strength. He makes our steps firm and although we may stumble He will stop us from falling over because he is holding our hands. (Psalm 37:23-24).

GOD ACTS MIRACULOUSLY

When you follow God’s ways he will protect you and give you everything you need. “God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19) I remember, a few years ago, one rainy Sunday evening when I was driving with my wife. Suddenly our car broke down. It stopped and I couldn’t fix it. So we started to pray. Very soon two men on a motorbike came towards us and asked what was wrong. I explained that there was a problem with the battery. They left us and returned with a car battery which they fitted in our car. Then they very kindly came back to our home with us, on their bike in the pouring rain. When we got home they took back their battery and drove off. Before they left I offered them some money for their trouble but they refused. We were very surprised and grateful for their help and we thanked God for sending them to us. I had never seen these people before or since that time but I am convinced that it was God who was acting through them to rescue us in our hour of need. So there is no need to be afraid if you love God and give your heart to Him. When you do this you will want to return quickly back to Him when you fall and in return He will be with you always to guide and protect you.
