Holiness what’s the big deal?

“You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:16

We Need to be Living Saints

Many of us teenagers after encountering Jesus say: “I really want to grow in holiness. I don’t want to sin and hurt Jesus anymore. I want to avoid everything impure.” or something similar. That desire for holiness that the Holy Spirit has put in us is a great start! We need to be living saints who sanctify the world and who can boldly say “No” to its impure and unholy ways. I have to admit though it isn’t easy, but it is possible.

Satan Targets Teenagers

Growing in holiness can be challenging today because impurity is plastered everywhere. We see it in movies, music, on the TV, fashion, billboards, books, magazines, entertainment and even in people. Living in an impure world can be very challenging for a Christian. This is where many teens begin to weaken in their spiritual growth because Satan targets us through the media and entertainment, and we can easily fall into his trap. But remember the Word of God says, “The one in you is greater than the one who is in the world!” (1 John 4:4). Who is the “one in us”? He is the all-powerful and all-knowing God who does not allow his children to become the devil’s punch bag. If we truly desire to become holy and pure, then no-one or nothing can stop us, for we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:12). Saints and martyrs are beautiful examples of those who lived in the world but grew in purity and holiness. Our dearest holy Mother and Jesus himself lived in this world and showed us that we can be pure, and by his grace we can show a glimpse of heaven to others, through the example of our lives.

Say No to Unholy Situations

Psalm 119:9 asks “How can young people keep their ways pure?” and it gives the answer “by guarding it according to your word.” Remember the young man Joseph in the Old Testament. He must have had a deep thirst in his heart to please our loving God, by keeping himself holy and pure. That is why when Potiphar’s wife came to tempt him he ran away from the situation saying ‘No’. We too should be able to say ‘No’ to unholy situations, conversations, videos, and music that can damage our growing holiness.

The Power of Prayer

St. Josemaria Escriva said, “Never talk of impure things or events. It’s a subject that sticks more than tar. Change the conversation.” The saint goes on to say “I have never talked about impurity, but I have spoken many times, as I have to do, about chastity, purity, and the joyful affirmation of love.” The Holy Spirit gives us the anointing and grace like Joseph to say ‘No’ when we are being tempted to fall into sin.

Another powerful weapon to grow in purity is prayer. We can cry out to the Holy Spirit to make us holy, and to become pure. God desires that each one of us should be holy, “Be holy, as I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16). Blessed Mother Teresa said that “purity is the fruit of prayer.” When you go to school, college, trips to town, or use the internet or anything else then do take your saints with you. Ask your guardian angel to cover your eyes and ears from impure things. Claim the Word of God to overcome temptations that come your way. As you begin your day, spend time calling on your favourite saints and martyrs and ask for their help. But don’t just pray for yourselves but also for those teens you know, who may be struggling.

The Sacraments Help Us

Another powerful way to grow in holiness is through the Sacraments. That’s why the church offers them. The Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) is a beautiful Sacrament that offers us freedom and the grace to be free from the clutches of sin. St John of the Cross said, “Strive always to confess your sins with a deep knowledge of your own wretchedness and with clarity and purity.” The truth is that we are bound to mess up a few times in our spiritual journey. We may fall again and again, but God’s mercy will pick us up again to start afresh. We may go back to our old habits but the blood of Jesus will cleanse us from all our sins.

Christ is Enough

St. Josemaria Escriva said, “To defend his purity, St. Francis of Assisi rolled in the snow; St. Benedict threw himself into a thorn bush; St. Bernard plunged into an icy pond. You – what have you done?” God may not be asking this from us, but we can crucify our flesh so that God’s power can penetrate and work in us. Let us learn to crush our worldly desires and remember that Christ is enough for us. Learn to Say ‘No’ to sin and become a prayer warrior. And if you fall: remember GGCGet up, Go, Confess!

Praise the Lord!

Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunderpeals, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. REVELATION 19-6

Paul and Silas are Rescued

In Acts 16 we read the remarkable story of how God rescued Paul and Silas. After being beaten they were imprisoned in a dark dungeon with their hands and feet bound in iron stocks. Most of us would have despaired but Paul and Silas began praising God and continued singing into the middle of the night. Their fellow prisoners heard them singing and praising God and suddenly there was an earthquake which somehow unlocked all the doors and padlocks and set all the prisoners free. The Bible says that God inhabits the praises of his people (Psalm 22:3). In other words, God dwells in the atmosphere of His praise. The very moment Paul and Silas began to praise God, the presence of God was revealed in a mighty way. When we trust in God and begin to praise him in the dark times of our lives, that is, during our illnesses and troubles, God will free us from our chains and release us from all the powers of darkness.

The Offering of Our Lips

Psalm100:4 says “Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his holy name.” We read in the Old Testament how the Israelites came into the Lord’s courts with thanksgiving and praise and as an offering to God they would bring their sacrifices of blood in the form of bulls or lambs and offerings of silver and gold. The good news for us is that Jesus sacrificed his own blood for the atonement of our sins, so we don’t need to offer God any blood sacrifices, just the offering of our lips. What is the offering of our lips? Hebrews 13:15 says, “ Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name.” The ‘fruit of our lips’ is praise and thanksgiving to our Lord. Jesus wants us to bring our shouts of praise into his holy presence. Each day is a new gift of God to us and every morning we should remember and thank the Lord for the precious gift of his love. It is a wonderful thing to enter into each new day with praise and thanksgiving. When we praise God, it releases an atmosphere of joy and peace and manifests the immediate presence of God in our lives.

Turn to the Problem Solver

We tend to praise God when something good happens in our lives but King David reminds us in Psalm 34:1 that we must praise God regardless our circumstances. When David’s first child with Bathsheba died, in his sorrow, he went straight to the temple to worship the Lord. (2 Samuel 12:20) David knew that no matter what happened in his life, God was in control and so was worthy of his devotion and praise. Even though David was a mighty warrior, his personal weapon was the weapon of praise!

There is another interesting witness of praise when King Jehoshaphat and his army were surrounded by their enemies. In the midst of his troubles, when defeat seemed inevitable, King Jehoshaphat turned to the Lord and told him, “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” (2 Chronicles 20:12) Instead of focusing on his problems, the King turned to the ‘problem solver’ and began singing and praising the Lord. Miraculously his enemies were defeated and the King celebrated their victory by praising and thanking God. It is the same God who is ready to move on our behalf each time we are faced with any kind of problem in our lives. When we start to praise God, instead of having a negative and complaining attitude, there is a sudden transformation in our thinking pattern and we begin to develop a new attitude of thanksgiving. When we begin to praise God, Satan flees and his plans to keep God’s children from approaching God are thwarted.

Join the Angels and Saints Praising God

In fact the Angels and Saints in heaven sing endless praises to our living God enthroned in majesty. St. John says in Revelation 19:6 “Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, Hallelujah. For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.” So we should not be embarrassed about what other people might think if we praise God. Each time we praise him we are surrounded by a heavenly host of Angels and Saints proclaiming the glory of God. Let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips that acknowledge the mighty name of Jesus. Hallelujah!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach me to praise you at all times. Give me the grace to give you all the glory and honour and make my life an instrument of your grace. Amen.

My New Best Friend

Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, REVELATION 3:20

My Life Seemed Perfect

I knew that God was real, Jesus was the only Saviour, and that the Holy Spirit could transform and heal. I had heard it many times. But did I care? No, living as a young teen in the twenty first century I didn’t bother about God. All I ever wanted to do was to have fun and live my life the way I wanted to. I had many friends and they meant the world to me, they were the first ones I ran to if I needed help. My life seemed perfect; I had everything – a loving family, many friends, all the love and care that I needed and I happily spent many hours watching movies and TV programmes.

However, I now know that I was missing the best friend that I could ever have, one incredible and loving guy. His name is the name that is above all names – Jesus Christ. I didn’t have him in my life and therefore when I look back at those times I realise that my life was meaningless, and to be honest, extremely boring.

Suddenly Everything Seemed to go Wrong

For years my life focussed around the things of the world, which I now know, was dangerous, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” (1 John 2:15). Suddenly, when I least expected it, there came a period in my life when everything started to go wrong. For various reasons, I had to leave my friends and everything which I thought gave me happiness. I was left with a few friends who I really didn’t really bother with and my family. Sirach 20:11 says “There are losses for the sake of glory.” Little did I know at the time, that the terrible things that were happening to me were for the sake of God’s glory. With each passing day, I was feeling lonelier and more isolated. Inside I felt heartbroken and very confused at what was happening to me. To hide my inner pain, I tried to appear tough and stubborn on the outside although on the inside, I was screaming for help. I became so hard hearted that I couldn’t cry whatever happened.

I needed the Joy of the Holy Spirit

It was around this time that I went to a Catholic Convention. In one of the sessions a girl, who I knew quite well, got up to give her testimony. During her story, she spoke some words that I will never forget, they hit me like a bolt of lightning,

“When the Holy Spirit came upon me I got a feeling of joy that I had never experienced before.” The moment she said these words my eyes flooded with tears, but I felt really embarrassed and tried to hide them. From that day I felt a real need, deep in my heart for the joy and love of the Holy Spirit.

The Experience was Indescribable

By the grace of God, my father took me to a retreat led by the Kids For Kingdom team and that’s where I came to know how awesome Jesus really is. I went there feeling broken inside but I was open and thirsting for the love of God. One day, during the retreat, suddenly, everyone started praising God and crying out to the Mighty Saviour. A deep sense of repentance came over me and without even realising it, I started praising and crying out to the Lord with them. The experience was indescribable, words could not explain what it meant to me. When I finally opened my eyes, I realised that we had been praising and worshipping God for three hours and I was still crying out with joy. Psalm 147:3 says, “God heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds.” We were all filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit so much that we couldn’t stand still. So we continued dancing, It felt like I was dancing with the angels in heaven.

Jesus Became my New Best Friend

“If anyone is joined to Christ, he is a new being. The old has gone and the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17). Ever since Jesus became my new best friend, my whole life has changed and it’s great because I know that the love and joy that I am receiving from the Holy Spirit is something that will never run out or stop. Praying, reading the Bible, family prayer, and going to Holy Mass are now the first priorities in my life, because they bring me closer to Jesus.

If you want to experience this heavenly joy or if you want the love of Christ to fill you to overflowing then all you have to do is open your heart to Jesus and surrender your life to him. Then, he himself will come into your heart and fill you with his love and joy. “Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me.” (Revelation 3:20).

July 2014 – Editorial

Welcome to the third issue of Kingdom Revelator. I hope and pray that it is helping you to develop in your faith and discipleship and that through it the Holy Spirit is revealing more of God’s Kingdom to you.

This month we look at how young people can live the Christian life, the difficulties that they face and how the Holy Spirit can help them. We continue our series about the Sacraments with a look at what happens when a baby is baptised. We have been greatly blessed by the wonderful articles, drawings and poetry that young people have sent in and are very grateful for all your contributions. Without your help producing this magazine would not be possible.

I was recently struck by some words of wisdom from Pope Francis. He was speaking about families and said that there are three important words that are essential to a happy family life. The first word is ‘please’. We say this so as not to be forceful and it shows consideration for other people, “May I please do this?” The second word is ‘thanks’. It is so easy to forget to thank our parents and brothers and sisters and to take them for granted. “Thank you for your love” are powerful words that bring joy and harmony to the family. The last word is ‘sorry’. We all make mistakes and it’s very easy to offend or hurt someone. Sometimes harsh words are spoken but the Pope says that we should never let the sun go down without being reconciled. Every day we may need to say “please forgive me” and then we can start to live in peace and harmony again. Remember those three little words – Please, thanks, and sorry.

If you have a testimony or faith story that might help other young Christians in their journey of faith then please e-mail your article or story to kfkmag@gmail.com. If you would like more copies of Kingdom Revelator to distribute in your school or parish please contact us at kfkmag@gmail.com and we will be happy to discuss your requirements. When you have finished reading this magazine please don’t put it into the recycling bin but pray about who you can pass it on to at your church or school. This will allow God to use you to pass on the Good News to someone else – it’s an easy way to evangelise.

I pray that the Holy Spirit will touch your heart and your mind and increase your faith as you read this magazine.

Come into our House Lord

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7

Jesus said, ‘I Must Visit Your House.’

One day Jesus was passing through the city of Jericho. It was the centre of the tax collecting districts and many tax collectors were employed there.

The chief tax collector was a wealthy man named Zacchaeus. He had learnt of Jesus’ coming and was anxious to see what kind of person he was. There was so many people waiting to see him and he could not see because he was a small man so he decided to climb a sycamore tree.

When Jesus came to the tree he looked up and said ‘Hurry down Zacchaeus, for I must visit your home.

Zacchaeus Welcomed Jesus In

Zacchaeus came hurrying down and welcomed Jesus into his house. Yet the Pharisees complained when they saw what was happening. Zacchaeus said to Jesus that he would help the poor and would pay back the people that he had cheated four times the amount that he had stolen. Jesus said ‘Today salvation has visited your home.

His Life Was Never the Same Again

Zacchaeus was curious to find out more about Jesus and as a result his life was never the same again. Jesus had been waiting for him to open his heart to him and when Zacchaeus did, Jesus spoke to him asking if He could visit the tax collector’s home.

We sometimes feel like one of a crowd that no-one notices, we may be worried or lonely with no-one to talk to. But we shouldn’t be afraid, Jesus knows where we are, even if we are hiding up a tree, he is watching us and waiting for us to want to find out more about him.

Let us Invite Jesus

In Jesus is for everyone. At any time we can go to him with our problems and troubles and ask for his help. He is present in all the tabernacles and we can invite him into our hearts when we receive the Eucharist. Jesus, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament, offers himself to us. All we have to do is say, ‘Yes Lord, please come into my life and take control.’

His love can transform us and give us everything we need to face the daily challenges of life. He can bring peace, courage, joy, hope and love to strengthen us. We only have to ask him in and he will come.

Sam’s First Lent

Three years ago, Sam had his first Lent. He was a really good boy in school and at home. Even though his family was an ordinary family they weren’t religious. Sam didn’t know why he celebrated Easter and Christmas. In other words, he didn’t know who Christ was!

On Shrove Tuesday or Pancake day in school he had two pancakes. Like every other day he had fun and learnt lots of new stuff. On the way home, he talked on and on to his mum about his day. At last they reached home. He ate more pancakes and soon it was time for bed.

At midnight Sam suddenly woke up and he saw a woman dressed in blue and white in front of him. A shiver ran down his spine and he started to feel a bit frightened. Sam felt like screaming his head off but something stopped him. The mysterious women had seven stars glittering like gold around her head. In a flash the woman spoke, “My son Sam, I am Mary, your Mother. How are you dear?” Sam’s mouth dropped open wide. He replied,” Who are you and what do you want?” But Mary didn’t answer his questions, instead she started to talk about God and his love, Jesus, Easter, Christmas and Lent. Before Sam did not know anything about these things but now he’s an expert.

The next morning, Sam began his Lenten promise. He didn’t just give up chocolate; he also gave up TV, meat and sweets. Near the end of Lent God sent Sam lots of blessings. God also gave him the gift to go to Mass every Sunday.

A Modern Day Saint

There are many incredible stories of miraculous events that surround the life of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, better known as Padre Pio. He was an Italian priest who bore the stigmata, the wounds of Christ in his body. God used this holy man to perform many healings and miracles. Devotion to Padre Pio spread throughout the world in his life time and is still flourishing today.

Francesco Forgione was born in Italy on May 25, 1887 and from a young age he wanted to become a priest. When he was sixteen he entered a Capuchin Friary as a novice monk and became a friar in 1902. Francesco was ordained a priest in 1910 and became known as Padre (Father) Pio.

He received the wounds of Christ in his body

Padre Pio was a very holy and humble man who did not seek fame or fortune for his miraculous deeds but gave all the glory to God. The image of Jesus hanging on the cross was a very powerful symbol in his life and one day in 1918, when he was kneeling in front of a large crucifix he received the stigmata, the visible marks of the crucifixion on his body. Painful, open bleeding wounds appeared on his hands, his feet and his side. For the next fifty years he bore the stigmata which bled continuously and were usually accompanied by a sweet smell, similar to the perfume of flowers.

He was an answer to prayer

God used Padre Pio very powerfully to perform many miracles and healings. There are many testimonials documented in books and on the internet from people who, through his prayers or by touching something that belonged to him, have been cured of terminal illnesses, addictions and life-long disabilities – a deaf and dumb girl being able to speak and a child who was born without pupils in her eyes being able to see. The doctors could not explain many of these healings. There are also stories about Padre Pio appearing to people to give them help in their hour of need when he was not physically present with them but he somehow appeared to them in spirit. He was an answer to their prayer.

People flocked to see him

News of the many miraculous events that surrounded Padre Pio’s life spread quickly during his lifetime and pilgrims started flocking to the small friary to get a glimpse of the priest with the wounds of Christ or to be present at one of his Masses. Some got the chance to kiss his gloved hands and it was a great privilege to go to Confession with him. Padre Pio had the ability to read people’s hearts and he used the Confessional to draw them closer to Jesus. If he thought that someone had not confessed all their sins he would often tell them what they had done wrong and bring them to repentance. He was inspired by the Holy Spirit with just the right words of encouragement and advice for each person who came to him.

Padre Pio Prayer Groups

During the Second World War Pope Pius XII called for groups of people to get together to pray for peace and for the world. Padre Pio said, “Prayer is the best weapon we have, and the key to God’s heart” and invited his followers to start local prayer groups. These quickly spread around the world and many are still going strong today. Padre Pio Prayer Groups are a world-wide ministry and people are still testifying to receiving healings and miracles as a result of praying for the intercession of St Pio. Even after his death God is still answering the prayers of Padre Pio.

100,000 people attended his funeral

Unlike many saints, Padre Pio was well-known in his lifetime and when he died in 1968 at the age of eighty-one, his funeral was attended by 100,000 people. He was canonised (declared a Saint) on June 16, 2002, when over 500,000 of his followers gathered in Rome to witness Pope John Paul II proclaim him Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.

Words of Wisdom From St Pio:

“Pray, hope and don’t worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer”.

“You must speak to Jesus not only with your lips but with your heart”.

“The Lord our King will hold the door of His heart open for anyone who wants to enter for an audience at any time.” “I can refuse no one. How could I, when the Lord refuses me nothing?”

“A thousand years of enjoying human glory is not worth even an hour spent sweetly communing with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.”

Pushing the Boundaries

When I was on a train journey recently, the train pulled into a station and I saw on the opposite platform a little girl and her mother. As the mother turned her back for a few minutes to rummage for something in her suitcase, I watched as, with a cheeky smile, the little girl started to hop around the yellow line that we all know that we should stand behind. She had obviously been told about this rule. But as soon as her mother’s back was turned, she started to edge closer and closer to the line, then onto it, then over it. Then she quickly hopped back behind it. And the whole process started again.

I know that little girl’s game

As I watched the little dance she was doing, I wondered if maybe sometimes that was what I looked like to God. When I know that something is wrong but I do it anyway. Sometimes, it is less obvious to us why we are told to “stand behind the yellow line”, but for our own safety, God paints it in clear colours anyway and instructs us to remain behind it. He gives us our boundaries.

But I know that little girl’s game. I have edged my way closer to the line when I thought that no-one was looking, then thought: “Well, perhaps if I just step onto it that would be ok.” And then, suddenly, it doesn’t seem so far to just dip a toe over the line and then my whole foot, then maybe the other. Before I know it, I’m knee-deep in sin and full of regrets. I risk my safety, my salvation, for something so small and momentary.

God does something amazing

But that is when God does something amazing.

He gives me the grace to step back over the line. And sometimes, often, I do the whole dance all over again. I resent God putting the line back in place and return to my old ways. But every time, he puts my safety first. His so-called ‘rules’ are not there to stop us having fun. They are there to protect us, to keep us from danger. And when I forget that, he offers me grace.

What about you? Do you recognize the little girl’s dance? Have you experienced God’s grace in those moments when you feel you’ve edged over the line?
